Question by John: Do Best Buy employees get spiffs for selling iPad screen protectors?
I was at a Best Buy tonight and told a sales rep that I wanted to purchase an iPad. He picked up a screen protector and told me I needed to buy one of those too. I let him know I wanted a leather case which doubled as a stand instead. Both were ; part of the screen protector cost was from a Geek Squad installation fee.
The sales guy said “No, you’re getting this,” and held up the screen protector. Now, last time I checked Best Buy was not Radio Shack. I don’t go to “The Shack” very often specifically because of their pushy sales associates. If I do enter a Shack, I mentally prepare myself for hostile encounters first. I was not prepared for such an encounter at Best Buy.
The guy proceeded to tell me stories about people who scratched the screens on their iPads with their keys. He told me the fee would be the best I ever spent. He told me his manager would yell at him if he let me walk out of the store without the screen protector.
I told him I would reconsider and would come back tomorrow. I think he thought that I was talking about the screen protector, since he headed to the back and climbed up a ladder but, uh, after dealing with a sales guy like that my wallet had firmly embedded itself deep within my pocket and was not coming out for anyone under any circumstance.
The guy said he did not receive commission for sales. So, my question: would he have received a spiff? Would it have been from the Geek Squad service?
Apple seems to be very accessory-happy, doesn’t allow for memory upgrades, forces their customers into using proprietary keyboards and so on so I am wondering if perhaps this is something that Best Buy employees are trained to do only for Apple products?

They go for the upsale on everything. I detest Best Buy and will not buy anything from them for any reason.
