Q&A: Web / iPhone app developer. $42k underpaid? What kind of raise can I get?

Question by mjlyco: Web / iPhone app developer. k underpaid? What kind of raise can I get?
I was hired last November as a front end web developer making k. I work mostly with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, XML & Front Page. We get annual raises in Feb. My raise was about 9% to 42k. Recently I began coding iPhone and iPad applications in xcode. I build the apps programatically without Interface Builder. My bosses love me for my speed, accuracy and bug free code. I feel that I am still under-paid. Doing google searches for salary come up with anything from 50k to 90k. Its hard to know what is correct.

My question is: For working in Princeton, NJ doing what I do, am I underpaid?
Also: What kind of raise should I shoot for in February?

Thanks

The answer to your question is difficult, as you don’t explain your experience and your skill level is in the eyes of the beholder (e.g. my parents think I’m a genius programmer, but I don’t know if Google would think so). I think there is a very obvious thing you should do to determine if you’re underpaid, and that’s to start interviewing at other companies. If someone offers your 50% more, you’ll know your answer.
