Question by Thinking Through: Can an iPad or Tablet replace a computer for a digital audio workstation?
I have a piano midi controller. It requires software to extract sounds out of the computer. I was wondering if its possible to replace the computer with an iPad or Tablet computer so its more portable. It would have to be running Cubase, FruityLoops or something equivalent and would be connected via USB to the charging port of the Tablet/iPad.

Depends how complex the thing you are doing is.
They may not be powerful enough.

Tablet PC’s are great for email, some games, simple spreadsheets and word proccessing.
But right now, they do not have the power or memory to run software like you described, they would be very slow. You are better off buying a desktop that can run those programs effectively.
You may be able to use a tablet to play back the music you composed, but you most certainly will not be able to compose on a tablet.
Not sure how powerful it is, but Alesis has already developed an interface.

I don’t have an iPad yet, so I’m not sure what software is available. But if you can get software you like, there’s your interface.
It really depends…but probably yes! =)
