Apple’s release of the iPad means that many of the biggest selling accessories right now are cases to protect your new addition to the family. With the bewildering number of cases already on the market, […] reviews over the coming weeks will help you come up with a choice of case that best suits your needs.
When you first open your iPad, it feels quite delicate and your first instinct is to want to treat it with kid gloves. Aside from protective films, there isn’t much that can be done to protect the glass front of the iPad. It seems to stay fairly scratch-free as it is. The back casing also needs attention. Being made from aluminum, it’s pretty tough, but none of us wants to see it become marred up and scratched from constant handling or laying your iPad down on various surfaces. Macally’s Metropad Series of iPad cases provide a simple, yet elegant solution to this problem.
Macally offers the Metropad cases in four varieties: clear (Metrocpad), clear with silicon grip (Metrolpad), chrome (Metrompad), and black (Metrobpad).
I received the three cases you see pictured above, and I find that all three cases provide excellent protection for your iPad in a thin and lightweight package. I’m partial to cases that have a slim profile and don’t take away from the aesthetic beauty of your Apple product. Macally’s Metropad cases do this very well.
After using the cases for several days, I’ve found that I prefer the black Metrobpad and the clear Metrocpad over the chrome Metrompad. The Metrompad looks really sharp, but it does get covered in fingerprints relatively quickly. If you don’t mind wiping it off as often as you do your screen, that’s no problem. The Metrobpad looks great too, and the Metrocpad maintains the iPad’s already great looks.
The Metrolpad isn’t pictured, but offers a secure silicon grip around the sides of your iPad with a clear plastic back that lets your iPad’s great looks show through.
The cases snap on without difficulty and stay on very well. Protection at the iPad’s corners is emphasized, leaving the sides and all controls/ports free to access. When you’re ready to take the case off, the case simply pops off and you’re ready to go.
The Metropad cases aren’t going to prevent much major damage if you should drop your iPad from any real height. Not many cases will, for that matter. The cases do a superb job of keeping the back of your iPad clean and scratch-free. Come to think about it, isn’t that the main reason most people buy cases for their electronics?
One subtle, yet very useful feature is the four small projections on the back of each Metropad case. This allows you to set your iPad down on a tabletop so it doesn’t rock around, remaining level as you work. The spacing is just right so you can type on your iPad without it tipping. It’s a feature you don’t really appreciate until you try it out and realize how useful it is.
Overall, I’m impressed with Macally’s first offerings in the iPad case market. They do a great job of protecting your investment, helping you enjoy your iPad well into the future.

This is a good looking option and protective of the iPad. However, it is not compatible with the iPad Keyboard Dock. The case offsets the dock connector too much and it is impossible to plug in. It does seem to fit with the non-keyboard dock though. The push through buttons do work but the rotation lock is rather hard to toggle. The finish quality of the black edge also leaves some to be desired. While it will still function just fine, there are some unsightly marks in the plastic where it wasn’t finished well.
If you want to use the keyboard dock, look for a different case. Rating 2 stars since it will protect the ipad well, just leaves a lot to be desired.
Had to edit this, after testing, it doesn’t work with either dock. The case is difficult enough to remove that “just take it out of the case to use the dock” won’t quite work. In order to modify the case to fit the dock, you’d have to cut out a rather large chunk of the back which would negate the purpose of having a case on your iPad. The iPad as a device really needs to be propped up on something, like a dock/stand. This case removes all functionality from the 2 Apple dock/stand options.

I bought a cheap, leather-like folding case when I got my iPad. It was nice but the entire iPad was covered except for the screen. If you have an iPad, you certainly know how beautiful it is and in the case it was just a brown leather cover and a screen. The beauty of it was all hidden.
After looking on Amazon, I saw this case and like the idea that the hard construction of the plastic would protect the back but you’d still be able to see it through the frosted backing. The grip material on the edges was an added bonus because I wondered how much it would irritate to be holding the ends of a hard piece of plastic. When I received it, I liked it immediately. The iPad snapped in very securely and the way the black edges of the case blend in with the black border of the iPad makes it seem like it’s part of the iPad. It just looks so great in this case. The edges of the case don’t feel rubbery. They feel a little hard but not uncomfortable at all. I carry it in a netbook sleeve.
I wondered if I would miss the folding, book-like case because it’s a lot easier to hold a book by each side when reading and my primary use for the iPad is to read books. So far it hasn’t been a problem because I most often have it on my lap. I got an office supply store copyholder stand which adjusts to many levels of angle and it’s worked out great.

As is noted in other reviews, you should be aware that you can’t use the Apple iPad dock with this case. I found this out the hard way. It would be nice if the manufacturer pointed out this shortcoming in advance. But, hey, that’s why it is cool to have these user reviews.
If that isn’t an issue for you, this case is a really good choice. The fit is excellent, and it is relatively easy to install. The case is in one piece, so you put one side of iPad in the case and then work the silicon edges on to the other three sides.
The silicon grips on the tops and sides are very appropriate and enhance the grip significantly.
Also, the back of the case has four small raised “bumps” arranged in a rectangle that allow iPad to sit flat on a table or desk. Without the case, iPad will rock slightly when placed on a flat surface, due to the curved back.
The finish of the silicon edges could be a little better. When you examine it closely, you see some minor imperfections. Nothing serious though.
All in all, this is a really good case. It provides good protection to the back and sides (no film is included for the front) and feels good in the hands. However, if you must to be able to dock while iPad is in the case, you should look elsewhere.

Being an avid Apple owner, I was very excited about the iPad. Our family of 5 used it non-stop without a case or screen protector for nearly 2 weeks, until I noticed a small scratch on the screen. It was then that I decided to invest in a good case/screen cover combo.
I ordered this case, and it arrived in just 4 days via Super Saver Shipping. The packaging was a bit bizarre, and the manufacturer’s box had been partially crushed. The case inside, however, was perfect.
The case itself seems to be fairly well-built. Having owned a number of cases for the iPod touch, I like to think I know quality when I see it. It’s a 4 of 5 stars in this category. The case was injection-molded and still shows a bit of leftover soft plastic that protrudes from the side. It’ll need a bit of trimming, which I don’t terribly mind. If you’re looking for a picture-perfect case, though, this may dissuade you.
Do not be completely dissuaded, for the backing is top-notch. It’s of the perfect thickness to both inspire confidence in the case’s protection for your iPad and to avoid feelings of unnecessarily added weight. The feel of the plastic is great. It’s neither too textured nor too slick. It is see-through (the item’s picture is perfectly representative), but not glossy or clear – rather it is translucent. Also, there are 4 small semicircular bulges on the rear. These are intended to serve as stabilizers when typing on a flat surface, as the rounded iPad tends to roll about. They work very well, and I hardly notice them when holding the cased iPad.
Considering all, this is a great case. I’d definitely recommend it, as did […] (one of the very best sites for review of Apple-geared accessories. If you are considering a purchase of Apple accessories, do yourself a favor and visit their site!). In fact, they rated this case as #1 in its class.
Do not buy this case from iUnitek! They don’t ship products in any reasonable amount of time nor does their customer service respond in any useful fashion. Stick with amazon, iLounge, and Apple, and you’ll always be okay.
