Question by Science Dude: Should I get an iPad or iPod Touch 4g? Please help?
Okay, so I have a 13 inch MacBook pro, and it is a very good machine, but I think that I need something more of a secondary machine for times when I need to just check email or browse a certain web page for homework or for research.
The quandary that I am faced with, though, is whether I should purchase an iPad or not. I like the way the iPad was designed as a tablet that supplements your laptop, but I think the price is steep for something that a netbook can do effortlessly. I like netbooks, but they are clumsy, slow, and they make no sense in purchasing if I already have a laptop. The iPad defeats the netbook in this scenario, as it can be easily carried around (especially to school) and it has many applications that are tantamount to the breadth typically seen on a consumer-level program and operating system. I plan on using the iPad as a primary computer for casual needs, and then switch over to my MacBook when I need to type extensive material or do other video/presentation activities.
On the other hand, the iPod touch has just been refreshed, and it is almost comparable to the iPad in terms of performance. It is manifest that the iPod much more portable than its sibling, and so that makes it very appealing. Nonetheless, the iPod doesn’t function in the same way an iPad does, so I conjecture that the iPod can only be used for strict casual activities, whereas the iPad may be a little more flexible in terms of word processing and other more non-casual computer usage scenarios.
As of right now, I am a high school student, and the choice of purchasing either one of these devices will be a direct influence on the gains in productivity I receive. Do you think that the iPad + MacBook 13 is a good choice for students, or may a iPod touch 4g (with camera and retina display) + MacBook 13 be a more beneficial purchase. As I see it, the former is much better for productivity, but I know that the price difference is 0 (at least in Canada with HST) and I will begin to use my MacBook on a lower basis.
As well, which of these would be the most distracting to my homework research when I need to use either of the devices? I see that the iPod Touch may be more distracting due to its small size, so when you think of getting an email, you could instantaneously whip it out. That would create a big distraction, but I hope the iPad, then, is a better recourse.
Please help me make my decision, PLEASE!

Many people are starting to realise that the iPad isn’t just an over sized iTouch. I mean yeah it does have the iPod installed in it but it’s nothing like it.
I see that you are going to use it for a web browsing. I have an iPhone and iPad and since I got the iPad I haven’t used the Safari web on iPhone… It’s just too small to browse a web and yes you can zoom in but it’s just a pain in the a*s zooming-in and out. You can’t even type on iPhone and iTouch properly as the keys are too small. I needed to practise a lot till I could type quickly. I love typing on the iPad keybord, it’s just so amazing. You can even use a wireless keybord and use that with the iPad but I think it’s useless unless you’re planning to write very long mails and stuff like that. I actually think that the iPad keybord is better than a normal one.
The iTunes is amazing too. Like on your Mac. You have so many apps on the iPad and there are more apps for the iPad than the iTouch and iPhone. You’ll love the apps on iPad as it has a very nice big screen. There are a lot of rumors that the next generation iPad will support FaceTime but so what? There aren’t that many people with the latest technology. I have an iPhone 4 and I haven’t made one FaceTime call as I don’t know anyone else with iPhone 4. And I know that people say that it’s a stupid device because it doesn’t have camera and doesn’t support Flash and stuff like that. Don’t listen to them.
Why would you need a camera on such a big device? It would be like carrying a clipboard around. And about the Flash. If you think that you’ll really gonna miss it I can tell you that you won’t. There are all these annoying ad banners that are running Flash but if you don’t have Flash then you don’t have the ads. And the Flash would slow it down anyway. And if you already have a MacBook then you have a Flash on that. And you can watch videos without Flash as you’ve got the great YouTube app and you can watch HTML5 videos. Well I know it’s not cheap but it’s certainly not overpriced.
And as you are going to browse the web a lot then I suggest that you get the WiFi plus 3G versionif you want to browse on the go..
Well I hope I helped and I hope you’ll go for the iPad. 🙂
Dido on what the guy above me said.
