The iPad really isn’t built for creating things. Touch input isn’t as precise or easily controlled as a mouse or stylus, and the lack of a keyboard also limits you. Programs such as Photoshop or 3dsmax aren’t available for it, and probably won’t ever be. The screen is also pretty small for that sort of thing. There are some drawing and other content-creation tools, but they’re limited in capabilities. The iPad is a great device for communication and consumption of media, but it’s not really much of a creation tool.

If you want a portable tablet-style device, take a look at the Axiotron Modbook (a MacBook converted into a tablet), or one of the TabletPC devices running Windows. They’re more expensive, but they can run “real” creative apps and support stylus input to give you the kind of control you need to use them.
