There are definitely lots of free apps for the iPad. You can filter a search on Appolicious to find just iPad apps that are free:

I assume you have an iPad and now realize that most addons cost between $10 and $20 each. It sucks, however now there is a new service called mypadmedia which serves to connect iPad owners with thousands of free ebooks, newspapers, comics, and more.
