Question by Dr Jim: How has the iPad saved you money or time over a laptop?
I would love to hear the benefits an iPad has other than just another cool techology that Apple has developed. So far I have not felt a ‘need’ to own one as it will be just be ‘more stuff’ I have to upgrade and maintain. How has it benefited YOU over what a laptop already provides?

iPad = Underpowered waste of money
I am in a similar boat as you are, still don’t feel that I need to have an iPad despite its potential uses. It will just be another device as I don’t think (in the current form) it can replace a computer.
Having said that, I can see how an iPad can complement a computer. You can do most of your tasks on the iPad, e.g., checking mails, social networking, watching movies, reading books, etc. You do not have to power up your computer for most of routine tasks. Your computer can then be left only for the demanding tasks, saving power bills along the way :). Although I am not sure, if that will be the case and even if it were, how long will it take before the savings in electricity bill compensates for the cost of buying an iPad.
I found a detailed analysis on what are people using the iPad for to see if that could provide any further insight and the results are not very earth shattering. The iPad is being used as a gaming device and to consume media on the Internet.
Overall, I am not quite sure if the iPad is a “money saving” device. It is a functional device which can partially replace and complement your existing devices 🙂
I don’t think it will save money it will actually encourage people to shed another 600 bucks for something that they never had needed.
But time is real factor for the success of iPad or you may say iPad is the first tablet or Netbook like device which is successful.
Many professionals are using iPad for their work. News,that a lawyer took out iPad for some reference, was floting around last month. 1 in every 4 doctors are either using or will be buying shortly

It does save time to the extent that I prefer to do everything on iPad. My job require me to create word document ,presentation then upload to various WebDAV server like DropBox,Box.net.
I used to open one tab for each WebDAV server and then find the document by name after that upload one by one. In the mean time I also had to minimize and maximize the document many time.
On iPad ,it’s piece of cake and even 4 years old kid can upload several documents in few seconds. Everything is set up, select all the files directly and hit upload button , you are done. And creating documents is super easy.
Since I got the iPad I have not used my MacBook Pro and Toshiba Satellite. I however have to use my Desktop iMac sometimes.
Recently I was watching MTV Movie Awards Live on iPad, my co worker tried to watch the same on PC , he was bombarded by Flash based ad banners and pop ups. He was not even annoyed with it because thats the way we all have using our devices.
But my iPad was running as if I am playing an original DVD. I love the fact that iPad doesn’t support buggy flash. We then compared Netflix video quality on PC and iPad and found video quality on iPad was significantly better.
In a month I normally make 50 presentation out of which as many as 45 can easily be created on iPad and I do create on iPad. Only 5 are over complicated so I do on iMac or my office computer.
But the ones that I make on iPad look simply stunning and it takes way lesser time than any body would take to create the same presentation on PC.
iPad’s battery is magical. I use iPad to extreme but still it lasts over 15 hours.By the time PC completes booting process I finish many task on iPad. It definitely saves time for me.
I have Xbox 360 and Wii but I hardly get time to play.Now I spare time to play on iPad. It’s great fun.
Overall I am obsessed with iPad
There are a lot of “Getting Things Done” apps in the app store that will help you get organized. When your more organized, your more efficient and you either make more money or save more money because your on top of everything.
Not to mention all the budgeting apps that you can get with it, those help you stay on top of bills and avoid late fees.
You can try to use a notebook, planner, or a PDA. But its going to be tough to get all these to do everything the iPad can.
One of the many uses are reading ebooks from just about any ebooks store another is for watching movies itunes store, and the zillions of useful apps basically its big enough to do all your functions like checking email browsing the web and the above mentions. It’s still cheaper than a computer more mobile if these are your uses if not it’s probably not worth it.

I’ve done a lot of research on the ipad. It issomething you don’t need to own it is a luxury item. It has many advantages an disadvantages over a laptop and many adantages over a laptop.
Advantages
more portable
maybe more fast as it has sorta mobile version of the Internet
more screen realestate that an iPhone or iPod touch
cool apps just for ipad.
And the list goes on but I want to try and keep this relitively short
disadvantages
no flash
no USB
no upgrade memory
lots of $$$$$$ but will tell you how to get it half price if you live in Australia and attend school( like me)
There is also a draw back with no camera as many do
personally I find there only to be a need for a front facing camera as I find it unusual to pull a 10 inch tablet out your bag and take a picture of something you see.
The biggest draw back to not having flash is not being able to watch a video content on the web. Personally I would play flash games on a ipad I would believe it to be hard to play as most require a keyboard which I personally would use.
So if you want to get a ipad half price and you live in Australia the ipad is classed as a laptop and that means you can get a rebate on it and get it halfprice if you understand what I mean
