Question by Lilly E: iPad jailbreak question (networks and apps)?
Hi,
I’m thinking about purchasing an iPad and all of the people I’ve talked to (and I mean ALL) recommend getting it jailbroken. I understand the basic principles of what it is, but I still have a few questions.
What happens when/if the firmware is upgraded (accidentally) on a jailbroken iPad? Also, can a jailbroken iPad never be upgraded? Is that such a bad thing?
Is it better to get a wifi only iPad or a one that has 3G also? In case of jailbreak, how does the 3G function? (what carrier and how much does it cost?)
Thanks all

If the firmware is updated, you will lose the jailbreak.
It can be updated to new firmware, but youll have to wait until a stable jailbreak for that firmware is released and re-jailbreak it. May not be bad to keep it on old firmware because new firmware doesnt always release new functionality that you want. If it does, like i said you can upgrade and re-jailbreak when a jailbreak is released.
3G is better, because you can use it anywhere, but it will be on ATT and you will have to purchase their iPad data plan for a month for 250mb or a month for 2GB (recommended). There is no contract with these. There is no change in 3G functionality when jailbroken that i know of.

-What happens if the new firmware is accidently upgraded?
You will have the new firmware and loose your jail break.
-Does that mean the firmware can never be upgraded?
No. It just means that if the new firmware hasnt been jail broken, you have to wait for the jail break to be released. It could take a couple days to a couple weeks to a couple months or longer…. just depends on how long it takes them to find the new loophole. Because of what they are doing, it would be incredibly difficult for apple to stop the jail breaks altogether, but they can make it harder to find.
-Yes, it WOULD be a bad thing if your firmware was never upgraded. You can go a while for sure. But most app developers will be using the newest firmware for their development. So you will have a lot of apps that you cant use without upgrading when major os changes are made (for example from 3.x to 4.x
