Question by Science Dude: Should I get an iPad or iPod Touch 4g? Please help?
Okay, so I have a 13 inch MacBook pro, and it is a very good machine, but I think that I need something more of a secondary machine for times when I need to just check email or browse a certain web page for homework or for research.
The quandary that I am faced with, though, is whether I should purchase an iPad or not. I like the way the iPad was designed as a tablet that supplements your laptop, but I think the price is steep for something that a netbook can do effortlessly. I like netbooks, but they are clumsy, slow, and they make no sense in purchasing if I already have a laptop. The iPad defeats the netbook in this scenario, as it can be easily carried around (especially to school) and it has many applications that are tantamount to the breadth typically seen on a consumer-level program and operating system. I plan on using the iPad as a primary computer for casual needs, and then switch over to my MacBook when I need to type extensive material or do other video/presentation activities.
On the other hand, the iPod touch has just been refreshed, and it is almost comparable to the iPad in terms of performance. It is manifest that the iPod much more portable than its sibling, and so that makes it very appealing. Nonetheless, the iPod doesn’t function in the same way an iPad does, so I conjecture that the iPod can only be used for strict casual activities, whereas the iPad may be a little more flexible in terms of word processing and other more non-casual computer usage scenarios.
As of right now, I am a high school student, and the choice of purchasing either one of these devices will be a direct influence on the gains in productivity I receive. Do you think that the iPad + MacBook 13 is a good choice for students, or may a iPod touch 4g (with camera and retina display) + MacBook 13 be a more beneficial purchase. As I see it, the former is much better for productivity, but I know that the price difference is 0 (at least in Canada with HST) and I will begin to use my MacBook on a lower basis.
As well, which of these would be the most distracting to my homework research when I need to use either of the devices? I see that the iPod Touch may be more distracting due to its small size, so when you think of getting an email, you could instantaneously whip it out. That would create a big distraction, but I hope the iPad, then, is a better recourse.
Please help me make my decision, PLEASE!
Oh, it is just the low-end, 16 GB iPad with Wi-Fi that I was looking at.

It depends if your willing to pay for 3g on the Ipad. If you were going to buy the 3g service capability the Ipad is the way to go so that you can take it anywhere and stay connected. If your looking for portability and easy access go with ipod touch. I own an ipod touch and as for research it works great. So it really depends on what your looking for in a Quality device
Give your answer to this question below!

if you JUST wanted to browse the web and check emails and stuff then I recommend you buying the iPad (you can also view photos, listen to music and watch video).
Obviously the iPad is well more expensive and the iPhone 3GS is cheaper than it. But we’re not concidering Phones at the moment. The iPod Touch can basically do all what the iPad can do but the new 4G has a front facing camera for facetime and a back camera for video recording. And its obviously smaller.
I would go with the iPad if I were you. Read some other answers aswell!
hope this helps!
If you love music and need information, assuming you are going to college, get a re-furbished ipod touch with a new warranty. I have seen a few from the Apple Store in the Apple Store for $149. I asked the same question, the ipod touch is the better deal because it is portable for the college student at the same time saves over $250 out of pocket. It is an able back up, their is nothing the ipod touch cannot do, that the ipad performs. Their is nothing the ipad can do, that the imac doesn’t already have within its abilities. The ipod touch is more portable. If your eyesight is dim, then the iPad is a bigger sheet of paper, so to speak.
I would say plan on being mobile and carry light. Perhaps this can help shape your decision. Inquire with an Apple Store employee and ask them the limit of memory card upgrade for the Imac version you have. Consider how recent the software and you will update it once, maybe twice if you want. Moving forward you could very well have an additional 4 -5 years of relevant life in your imac. Which gets you through one degree, halfway through the second, if the Imac is your main horse. Find out the amount of information you Imac can manage if fully utilized. For instance, an 8gb ipod can store 7,000 songs no longer than 4 minutes a piece. It can record 7,000 hours of movies etc. Understand what you have and be clear, then add to its capabilities based on being the extent of portability. If you choose to purchase the Ipad, get the base model with Wi-Fi. You don’t need storage space when you can download on the Imac, you don’t need a monthly telephone bill if you can carry around a $99 airport express wireless router and secure a hotspot, in the library, for instance. Or you can go to Starbucks and link in. Again, the Ipad is ancillary to the laptop. However, having said all of that. If you are a reader and a writer, get the Ipad. If your college books have to be purchased and you can purchase books electronically, then the iPad works like the stack of books I used to carry across campus years ago. Ipads niche are books for book readers, bottom line.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
Best.
