Question by P G: Should I go for a .us domain?
To be brief, I’m developing applications for iPad, iPhone, and Mac. I planned on creating a simple support website, but the name of my application has already been used for a .com domain. Would a .us domain name appear professional or sufficient as a second option. I’m not drawn to .biz, .net, or similar examples, and oddly, .us appears to be the one of the cheapest to register. What’s your opinion on this?

I quite like .us domains, but you need to remember that they are meant for the US market. It may hamper you a bit if you are aiming at customers outside the US. The .us domain TLD is short and clear. Godaddy has especially cheap prices when you first get the domain, but their renewal prices are way too high. That said, you can register it cheaply at Godaddy, and just transfer it to a registrar with better renewal rates later (such as Moniker, Name, or Dynadot).
I would recommend you stick with “.com” “.net” or “.org” since these are the top 3 TLDs.
If your domain name has been taken, you can try to put some dash “-” and see if it is available or not.
However, below are some few tips for you to have a good domain name:
– short and sharp
– meaningful, it conveys a clear message
– easy to spell
– easy to remember
– unique and descriptive
– solid, classic, not hokey
– contains site concept keyword for web spider visitors
– attractive
– preferably ends with “.com” “.net” “.org”
