There is a big difference in quality of the video BUT i cannot say if its worth it because it is dependent on the viewer of the movie. I watch SD because its cheaper. I feel 5 bucks is not worth it when i can go to redbox and watch HD on my TV.
HD is High Definition… On ipad its around 720p
SD is Standard Definition… On ipad its around 480p
on a small screen (less than 12 inches) its not a big difference.
Id also like to point out that you cannot have Blu-Ray quality on an Ipad. This might render HD useless to you.

HD = High Definition – This means that the video quality will be really crisp and vivid (think Blu Ray quality).
SD = Standard Definition – This means that the video quality will be very good (DVD quality), but not as crisp as HD. For most people, SD movies are just fine.
I would watch SD. HD refers to 720p or 1080p. If I were to watch it on an iPad, I would probably see little difference between SD and HD because the iPad has a small and lower resolution screen. Go for the SD.
